Let Me Collect Myself

May 2023 - May 2024

Final Paper
Let Me Collect Myslef was my capstone project in order to earn my BFA from NYU IMA.

The goal of the project was to create a dataset through manual labor. The idea of the project came from an investigation on the datasets that go into training AI machine learning models. Through conducting the labor of image collection myself, I hoped to highlight the extreme and unethical practices that dataset developers conduct. If one person collects 300 datapoints in a year within an ethcial framework, yet AI image generation takes tens of millions of images to be optimized, that means that the datasets that AI uses are unethcially sourced.

“So what?” was the topic of the capstone final paper, using evidence found through research alongside personal experience and annecdote.
