machine learning as a tool and as an artform is approaching meteoric ubiquity, sneaking into homes, personal lives, industries, practices, and cultures, all within a relatively immediate rate. it's so exciting. the only thing i can compare to this moment in history right now is at the advent of the photograph. the buzzing implications, the threat to the artists of old, the dramatic responses and shifts in the art world, everything's there but on steroids! the rise of accessible foundation models with which to make any machine learning model the mind can conceive feels like greater creative mud, creative implication than what thee camera might have suggested.
with the rise of a new body, with a new creativity, there rises still infinite implications. what space does machine learning occupy? what space does it take from others? what space does it create? who does machine learning enable? who's checking? who's being exploited? every question must be asked, and every answer implies progress-halting praxis. inequity is too often the outcome of progress, and at that same mind-bogglingly rapid rate that machine learning has been developing, so has the the piles of bodies in its wake. nevertheless, the only way to tackle infinity is head on, with the intent to not let go. so we may as well do our squats, lift our weights, and start preparing for a new wrestling match.
Industrial Soup was made as a physical response to a digital medium. One physical copy of the zine exists, bound in slotted accordion method.
